The Weekend Whisk – 10/6/12

I did it!!! As I was telling you last Saturday, I was all geared up to run my very first 5K race and last Sunday that’s exactly what I did. It was awesome! First, I have to say I was very surprised by just how nervous I was. I’m not exactly sure why I was so anxiety ridden but I was. It was a cold, rainy late afternoon.

I was freezing as I waited for the race to start but once we got moving, I was loving that cool air and the light rain that was falling. I set myself a steady pace and let my music take over. I just ran.

Halfway through I rounded a bend to see my mother-in-law, father-in-law, sister-in-law, brother-in-law and Maddy all cheering me on complete with homemade signs! It was amazing and made me happy beyond belief.

Shortly there after the rain stopped and the sun actually came out. Boy did it warm up fast. As I neared the end of the race, I felt this incredible adrenaline rush and I really started to push myself. On the final stretch I ran my heart out and my final time was 31 minutes and 53 seconds! I was definitely happy with that time since the last time I ran that distance I did it in 37 minutes 38 seconds. On average I was running a 10 minute mile which is 2 minutes faster that my last time. As I crossed that finish line I was elated and proud. Mike and Molly were there to greet me with a bouquet of flowers!

And Mother Nature finished off our race by shining a rainbow over the finish line. How cool is that? It was an amazing and accomplished day. Now I have already started thinking about setting a new goal for myself but that’s a whole other story that I’ll share with you shortly, but not today.

How was everyone’s week this week? Hope it went well! Here’s what was going on around Food Babbles this week. It was all about pumpkin!

Red Velvet Cheesecake Cake by Recipe GirlWith both Maddy & Molly’s birthday’s about a month away, I am on a serious cake hunt. In my travels across the internet I came across this amazing red velvet cake with cream cheese icing and it has a cheesecake layer in the middle! I don’t think either one of my girls will appreciate the wonder that is this cake for their birthdays but guess what? My birthday is less than a month away… Maybe someone needs to bake this for me! Any takers?

Lemon Pull-Apart Bread by Barbara Bakes: You all know about my recent frequent bread baking now thanks to Twelve Loaves so I’m always eyeing up wonderful bread recipes. I especially adore this lemon pull-apart bread with lemon icing. It sounds so bright and I’ve never made a pull-apart bread before so this definitely got bookmarked for future use.

French Onion Tart by Jennifer Perillo via Food52: I love french onion soup. Here Jennie transformed that classic soup and reinvented it in tart form with a swiss cheese crust. I am so intrigued by this recipe. I’ll definitely be making it!

Have a great week everyone!!!

Congrats to you! That’s quite an accomplishment! I recently started to exercise and try to lose some weight and get in shape, but I fear a 5k is a bit off in the future!

That Pumpkin Cream Cheese Bundt Cake looks awesome!

Thanks so much Matt! And trust me, I am brand new to running and a 5K is totally obtainable if you take it slow and train in manageable bits. I did Couch to 5K and it made the whole process easy. When I started 2 months ago, I had a hard time running a quarter mile. I kept succeeding and getting better which was SO motivating! You can do it!! And I’m so glad you like the pumpkin bundt. Thanks for all your kid words!!

To say you we’re amazing that day would be a huge understatement. Seeing you approach the finish line made me tear up a bit. Seeing you 20 yards away from something you’ve worked so hard towards was humbling. You always have and continue to inspire me to be a better man. This is just one example of the many ways you do it.
I’ll be running by your side for the next one and by your side forever.
Love ya babe
