I think it’s become abundantly clear lately that my favorite winter fruit is definitely the humble pear. Sure, I love pomegranates and all the citrus fruit but pears are something I eat almost daily in these cool winter months. These Spice Roasted Pear Cheddar Scones are by far one of my favorite pear treats I’ve made this season. My happy accident Chipotle Pear Applesauce is running a close second but these, these scone are spectacular.

Pun intended) But seriously, fruit and cheese are always amazing together. I can think of no exception to this rule.

For these special scones, I roasted pears with cinnamon and a touch of nutmeg until they were browned and a bit caramelized. That took plain old pears to a whole new level. Throw in a little sharp cheddar cheese and what you have is the perfect balance of sweet, spice and just a touch of savory. This is scone perfection, a lovely way to start off your day or to satisfy your afternoon sweet tooth.

Spice Roasted Pear Cheddar Scones

Spice Roasted Pear Cheddar Scones

The deep, sweet flavor of roasted pears and savory notes from cheddar cheese make these scones something extra special.


  • 4 Anjou pears, peeled, cored and cut into large chunks
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 12 tablespoons unsalted butter, chilled and cut into 1/2-inch cubes
  • 1 cup coarsely graded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 4 eggs, divided
  • coarse sugar, optional


  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
  2. In a large bowl, toss pears with cinnamon and nutmeg. Spread evenly on a rimmed baking sheet and roast in preheated oven for 15-20 minutes, until browned and dry to the touch, stirring halfway through baking time. Remove from oven and cool completely on baking sheet.
  3. Prepared two baking sheets with parchment paper. Set aside.
  4. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder and salt.
  5. In the bowl of a stand mixer, fitted with a paddle attachment, add cooled pears, butter, cheese, cream and 1 egg. Mix on low just until evenly moistened and mixture comes together.
  6. On a generously floured work surface, split the dough into two even pieces. Sift flour over one piece of the dough. Using a rolling pin, roll dough into a 6-inch circle that is 1-inch thick. Cut into 6 wedges and place each wedge onto prepared baking sheet, leaving 2 inches between each wedge.
  7. Whisk remaining egg with a teaspoon of water. Brush scones with egg wash and sprinkling with coarse sugar. Repeat with remaining dough.
  8. Bake in preheated oven for 30 minutes or until golden and firm. Cool on a wire rack until warm. Serve.
