Let’s talk mac and cheese, people. For me, it’s kinda the world’s perfect food. Creamy, cheesy, carb-y deliciousness. I’m an equal opportunist when it comes to macaroni and cheese. I’ve never met a mac I didn’t like. I was just saying last weekend how I could have lived on David Venable’s bacon mac and cheese from Comfort Foods That Take You Home. So good! But this Horseradish Cheddar Macaroni & Cheese is my new favorite. It’s creamy, cheesy and has a little spicy kick thanks to the horseradish. It’s warm and comforting, hearty and satisfying. Add a salad and this macaroni and cheese is perfect as a meal.

Given my love of all things cheesy and delightful, imagine my delight when I perused our recipe choices for Pass the Cookbook Club this month. Food aside, what was even more delightful was that our cookbook of choice was Sunny’s Kitchen: Easy Food for Real Life. As I gushed on Saturday, I really like Sunny Anderson and after meeting her in person I like her even more. She’s warm, friendly and absolutely hilarious! I was thrilled to choose one of her recipes and take it for my own little spin.

Horseradish Macaroni & Cheese -

Sunny spiced up her spicy macaroni and cheese with some pepper jack cheese and cayenne pepper. I had nearly everything on hand to make the recipe except for the pepper jack cheese. Whenever possible, I try to use what I already have when making a recipe. Enter horseradish cheddar cheese. I wasn’t exactly sure horseradish would work in macaroni and cheese because I’d never had it before. Hello!! Horseradish is amazing in macaroni and cheese! It adds such a nice bit of spiciness to the cheesy pasta. Top it off with some homemade golden, crispy, buttery breadcrumbs and this dish is ready to serve.

Horseradish Cheddar Macaroni & Cheese

Prep Time: 20 minutes

Cook Time: 45 minutes

Yield: 12 servings

Horseradish Cheddar Macaroni & Cheese

This Horseradish Cheddar Macaroni & Cheese makes a wonderful, comfort food and is creamy, cheesy and had a little spicy kick.


    For Breadcrumbs:
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
  • 4 slices white bread cut into 1/2-inch squares
  • Kosher salt
  • For the Pasta:
  • 8 ounces horseradish cheddar cheese, shredded
  • 8 ounces Colby cheese, shredded
  • 8 ounces extra sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
  • 2 cups pasta shells, cooked 1-2 minutes under recommended cook time
  • For Custard:
  • 2 teaspoons all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon dry mustard
  • 1/4 cup sour cream
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1/4 cup grated Vidalia or sweet onion
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 cup half-and-half


  1. In a large skillet, melt butter. Add bread cubes and toss to coat. Sauté until crisp and golden brown. Remove from heat, sprinkle with salt and set aside.
  2. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Spray a 9x13-inch glass baking dish with nonstick cooking spray. Set aside.
  3. In a medium bowl, toss together cheeses. Add pasta to a large bowl and sprinkle with 2/3 of the cheese mixture. Toss together and set aside.
  4. Whisk together flour, salt, black pepper and dry mustard in a large bowl. Add the sour cream, egg, grated onion, heavy cream and half-and-half. Whisk together until combined. Add mixture to pasta and cheese mixture. Stir to coat.
  5. Pour the pasta mixture into prepared baking dish. Sprinkle with remaining cheese. Bake in preheated oven for 35 minutes. Break the bread cubes into coarse crumbs and sprinkle over top of macaroni and cheese. Continue baking 10 minutes longer. Serve immediately.

Yeah for mac & cheese! It’s my ultimate comfort food, and when I lived abroad it was the number one thing I missed from the States. (ok, and good peanut butter) And with the crunchy breadcrumbs? Definitely hard not to scarf the whole bowl.

I love that you met Sunny, she seems so nice! My hubby would go crazy for this recipe. His Grandma used to make homemade horseradish, spicy and delicious:-) This is definitely cheesy happiness, YUM, Hugs, Terra

I’m with Alice–I’ve never met a mac & cheese I didn’t like! Love this idea–I’ve also seen bacon horseradish cheese, which may just make this the most perfect dish ever. 🙂

Oh heavens. I a bit ‘meh’ on regular mac and cheese, but I adore the nose hair curling kick that horseradish gives anything. This looks amazing and sounds absolutely delicious. I love your version.

Oh this looks fantastic, great substitute for the spicy jack cheese and a new love. I really like her show on Food Network, she seems really down to earth and so far her recipes are too!

I have not seen Horseradish Cheddar before. Now I have another cheese to hunt down and try. I am intrigued by the notes it must have added to this dish. Yahoo for gluten free pasta that lets me still enjoy one of my favorite dishes.

I adore horseradish but I never would have thought to put horseradish cheddar in my mac and cheese! That is such a great idea. This is going on my to do list.

…. I am so freakin bummed that I didn’t think to use horseradish cheese. It wouldn’t have gone with taco meat – but it would have been freakin epic all on its own!

I am not a huge fan of mac & cheese but once in awhile I come across ones that captivate & lure me in. Your horseradish cheddar version did just that. I love the consistency & flavor combination. You totally won me over.
