In my humble opinion, there’s really nothing better than cake. Hmm… well, maybe the only thing better than cake is handheld cake. I’m talking about whoopie pies people! Some people think of these little delights more like cookies while others think they’re more like cake. I’m on the cake side of the fence but we could totally call them cakey cookies. Really what does it matter when there’s frosting involved?
Yes, let’s talk frosting for a moment shall we? This frosting is absolutely, knock your socks off good. This month for Bake Together, Abby tempted us with her Vanilla Bean Whoopie Pies with Bittersweet Chocolate. What was even more special about this Bake Together was that in addition to our leader and own star baker Abby Dodge, we had another baking genius baking along with us this month. Greg Patent! If you aren’t familiar with his work, you must grab yourself copies of both Baking in America and A Baker’s Odyssey. For his version, Greg made Lemon Whoopie Pies with White Chocolate Lemon Buttercream. Whoa Nelly!
After reading both, I wiped the drool from my keyboard collected my thoughts and started planning my spin on these lovely whoopies. I knew I wanted chocolate so I had some direction. As I scanned my cabinets to see what I had to play with my eyes landed on a box of unassuming malted milk balls. Right then, an idea was hatched. So I have for you today soft, cakey chocolate whoopie pies filled with chocolate malt frosting rolled in crushed malted milk balls. They are handheld chocolate malted cakey cookie perfection.
Enjoy!

Beautiful, and I’m with you on the “cake” side of the fence. They are IMHO a delicious little hand held cake filled with goodness. I adore your version, I have always been a big fan of malt and chocolate together and I love that you are not shy about adding the malt!!
Thank you Suzanne! The malt actually was only prominent in the frosting. In the cake, it really didn’t come through too much which really made for a nice balance without overdoing it.
Oh my! I love malt balls!! This is so genius, Kate! Need to try this ASAP!
