Chipotle Pear Applesauce -

Don’t you just love happy accidents? You leave five dollars in your pocket. Annoyed that you can’t remember where you put it when you need it yet it’s like you won the lottery when it turns up in the dryer. Thinking all those fabulous cookies you baked are all gone only to find two stashed in the back of your snack cabinet that you hid there for yourself. This Chipotle Pear Applesauce was definitely a deliciously happy accident.

Originally, I had set out to make pear and apple jam with a kick of chipotle. I’ve made Spiced Cranberry Pear Jam before and it turned out absolutely fantastic! This particular jam recipe went a little awry somewhere and I’m not even sure how that happened. I was going for a chunky jam and maybe I just got a little carried away with the stick blender. I think that was my undoing since I normally mash the fruits up just a bit with a potato masher. Not sure why I went for the stick blender this time around.

What I do know is that after a small blend with the stick there were some discernible chunks with the rest being smoother yet it never got to that “jam-type” consistency. So what do you do when the universe gives you failed jam? You make Chipotle Pear Applesauce! I can’t say I’m overly upset about this particular fail because this applesauce recipe is just crazy good. After I realized the jam wasn’t happening, I blended the whole batch to a smoother consistency, like traditional applesauce. Tender pears and sweet apples get a hearty dose of cinnamon and a bit of heat thanks to that chipotle pepper. The end result? A sweet with a little spice that’s just oh so nice. The flavor combination is really incredible, making it hard to stop eating.

It’s wonderful all on its own as a sweet treat but I’ve also eaten it with fish and chicken as well. No matter how you choose to eat it, I know you’ll enjoy this unique flavor combination as much as I did.

Chipotle Pear Applesauce

30 minutes

Yield: 6 pints

Chipotle Pear Applesauce

Easy to make sweet and spicy pear applesauce.


  • 6 cups pears, peeled, cored and diced
  • 2 cups apples, peeled, cored and diced
  • 2 cups dark brown sugar
  • 1 cup apple cider
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon chipotle pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice


  1. In a large pot, combine all ingredients and place over medium heat. Bring to a low boil then simmer for 20 minutes until fruit is tender. Using a stick blender or very carefully transfer mixture to a traditional blender, blend until smooth. Alternately, you can mash the fruit mixture well with a potato masher to desired consistency. Continue simmering the mixture for 15 minutes longer.

  3. Wash your jars, lids, and rings in hot soapy water. Rinse well. Sterilize the jars and rings by boiling them in a large pot of water for 10 minutes, making sure the water covers the jars completely. Remove the jars and rings onto a clean towel, placing the jars upside down to remove any excess water. Remove the lids and move onto the clean towel.
  4. Divide the hot pear applesauce evenly between the jars, leaving 1/2-inch head space at the top. Wipe the rims clean with a paper towel and cover with lids and screw on the rings just until hand tight. Submerge the jars in the pot of boiling water fitted with a canning rack on the bottom, ensuring the jars are fully submerged and covered with at least 1 inch of water. Boil for ten minutes. Remove the jars and let cool completely on a clean towel untouched overnight.
  5. You may begin to hear popping sounds. This is completely normal and good sign the jars have been processed properly. The next morning, check the lids to ensure they don't budge or flex. If so, place the jar in the refrigerator and use right away.

Love the combination of flavors. I’ve had many “happy accidents” that forced me to improvise. They are stressful but do lead to tasty creations like this one.

I’m a sucker for pears—so why have I never thought to make pear sauce??? Your spiced up version would be fabulous with my next roast pork! YUM!
