This month for First on the First we did things just a little differently. Normally, we all make the same thing while putting our own personal spin on the assignment. This month Carrie and I decided we wanted to make candy. But not just any candy. The challenge then became to recreate your favorite candy. Like the candy you get at the checkout lane at the grocery store.
The possibilities are endless! I definitely have a sweet tooth (obviously!!) so trying to make a decision like this was difficult. There could be only one way to come to a conclusion. I would simple have to sample and perhaps sample a little more. So I took a little walk down candy land lane and tasted a few of my favorites. You see, I don’t just have one. I adore Snickers and Milky Way. I like to eat them frozen. So good! But then there’s Whatchamacallits. Holy cow, those are good! But there’s that whole peanut issue so those were out. When I really sat down and thought about what truly was my favorite, I knew. It had to be peppermint patties.
Of all the candy I can think of, this is the one I love. I love the dark chocolate exterior that conceals the refreshing, crisp peppermint filling so smooth on my tongue. This is heaven for me. Oh, guess what? I don’t know what it is about freezing candy but I like to eat peppermint patties solid from the freezer too! Weird, yes I know. But I’m okay with that.
You want to know the very best part? (I say this phrase far too often but it’s because I mean it.) It is ridiculously easy to make homemade peppermint patties! And they taste exactly like their name brand counterparts. All my taste testers at home and work exclaimed how amazed they were that they were spot on. Now, I honestly can’t take any credit for this creation other than the fact that I made the product. I did not create the recipe though. What the heck do I know about making peppermint patties? Nada. So when I set out on this endeavor, I scoured the internet and landed on the perfect recipe on Savory Sweet Life. If you aren’t familiar with this gorgeous blog, you need to lay eyes on it. Not to mention, Alice has a cookbook out now which I must get my hands on (*note to self!) My only advice would be to powder your hands with powdered sugar to roll the filling into balls, otherwise things get a little sticky.

Join us next month as we make empanadas! Just drop me a line if you’d like to be a part of First on the First. We’d love to have you!
